Ooooooh but Project is Samuel Rosenthal's label! I just bought the boxset there, let's just hope it will arrive in good conditions to my country :(
I also took the chance to get Black tape's last album and a 2nd DCD tribute compilation which I never seen before :D

Thanks a lot for the links! I'm so happy today! :D Can't wait to compare the quality of these CDs to the ones I have. Especially one of them was starting to have bad sound :(
  3.

I've compared them, because I've got the original ones..
Don't expect an enhancement of the quality like the MFSL remastered version of "within the realm of a dying sun" (maybe too enhanced - the sound is too different to the original release).
I like them (I've got a marantz ampli, harman kardon cd player, infinity delta speakers).
And they have an awesome packaging!
  4.
Frédéric should still have boxes left for sale at cycliclaw.com

As for the mastering, we didn't want to make it too extreme, we still wanted to respect the original sound, but just enhance it a bit. :)

Sorry for not answering earlier but I've been away for a few days.

    Cheers

    @ Peter Bjargo:

Any plans for a "Second era" box-set? Or is it too soon? ;)
  6.
Well, I did release Le Serpent Rouge, The New Light and Raspail so it would be only one more album. ;) But these titles are still quite fresh so I'd have to wait for a while. At the moment I'm working on both a Arcana album and another solo album...
  7.
Good times ahead then, Peter :) Thanks.
  8.

I think that it's the best choice! ;)

I do really appreciate this boxset!
    Thank you again Peter..
  9.
No problem. Thank you so much for buying the box! :)

Any more recommendations on similar music to DCD? I think that some of the Hybrids stuff is really great. It would be great to see what mr. Lovegrove himself would recommend when it comes to music in the underground scene. I myself find a lot of music, but rarely anything with a genuine depth to it.
If I were to be left deserted on an island and were to chose all cd's with one band I'd chose Popol Vuh without hesitation! ;)

    Nice to hear today

Mercan DEDE - Journey of Dervish 1999

    Great!
  10.
I received the Arcana box-set today! Wonderful...both the music and the package :)

I've mentioned it a long time ago, but a band I like that I believe is influenced by Dead Can Dance are Unto Ashes (not the lyrics though, since Unto Ashes's are mostly about death).
  11.
    @ Peter Bjargo:

Is the crackling sound on the bonus tracks of CD1 (Dark age of reason) intentional, or is my CD damaged? I suspect its intentional (perhaps to give it an "LP feel"), but I thought I'd ask for curiosity's sake.

They're as much about death as they are about life! I love Pagan ballads! ;)

We weren't able to find the original tapes for these two songs so we had to take them directly from the 7".

Yes, that's what I suspected after I posed the question. However, I don't see that as negative. It gives the songs a more rare and old feel, which in actual fact they are. By the way...what a great box set it is. Money well spent.

Wow, I have to admit the quality of my previous stuff was pretty low (one very ruined CD for Inner pale, and 128kbps mp3 for the other albums) but I'm really surprised.
It's... incredible. Even in my very small stereo the quality is so good!

I think I lost myself in the music several times while listening to the albums. I was there, lying on the couch, in front of the speakers... and yes, for a few moments I definitely lost myself in there.

Awesome! I'm so glad you guys told me about this boxset :D And really, the booklet inside and the packaging in general looks so nice, and yuuuummy the bonus tracks! Lovely under every point of view!
I had such an awful day at work, but now I feel so much better :D :D :D

I just watched "Lost in Translation" about an hour ago now I downloaded its soundtrack from Amazon.
There is a track called "Tommib" from Squarepusher which is just a fantastic snippet of music.
It is highly recommended to fans of DCD... or just anybody. Such a beautiful piece. The movie is great too, well worth checking it out!

I think that the duo The Knife's third album Silent Shout is very similar to DCD.
It may not seem it at first - it's all synthesised instruments & quite a lot of pitch-shifted vocals - but if you listen below these differences you hear that it's very similar: dark atmosphere, interesting rhythms and percussion, and the technique of repeating a tune or rhythm throughout a track (which is, to me, the only consistency between DCD's albums).

I also happened to notice that Brendan has favourited their video for We Share Our Mother's Health while I was nosily looking at his profile :D

I must have had that Pieter Nooten album for more than 20 years now; 23 by the looks of it.

Pieter used to be in Clan of Xymox, who were introduced to 4AD via a demo tape passed to label boss, Ivo, by none other than Brendan Perry.

Sleeps With The Fishes reworks some of Xymox's first album and adds new material. It's a very nice, relaxing album, one of the lesser known 4AD releases and sadly overlooked in general.

    Btw, to get back in-topic

I recently discovered Irfan (in ancient persian it means "Gnosis" or "Knowledge").
    Try them on Irfan

Only two albums, reeeeeally awesome. Melodic and sad, but not "dark". In some moments the voice of the female singer really recalls that of Lisa. And there are these very very powerful male backing choirs, love them :) I bought both album already and been listenin to them the past week.

'Santa Maria' (I hope didn't confuse the name of the song) is not so sad ;) I love them too.
  14.
I love Irfan. I see them more "ethereal" than "sad" though.
  15.
Irfan is really great! We actually performed together in Holland a couple of years ago.

It's really hard to find something with the same originality and class as DCD, I guess this is why they did such a major impact on alot of people, like myself. I find that keeping an open mind get's you quite far. I listen to alot of different musical styles, at the moment I listen alot to Krautrock and ambient music. William Basinski makes incredible strong minimalistic music.

Well I meant "sad" in a good way!
    Should have probably used "melancholic".

Really atmospheric, those melodies carry you away :)

If I have to name "similar" artists to DCD, aside of Arcana, I would definitely put Irfan and Love is Colder than Death on the first places.
Actually I wonder if LICTD are still alive? A lot of time passed since their last album (the "Time" compilation which came out after "Eclipse")

Oh and by the way, I too listen to a lot of different music styles. I have really eclectic tastes.
Most of you guys would probably be disgusted seeing some of the artists in my Last.fm playlist :D
  16.
I'm getting too old to have principles about what's acceptable to listen to and what's not. The only rule should be that you listen to what you like, whatever that might be. :)
One thing that's abit sad with getting older is that I'm having a difficult time finding music that really stays in my heart. I've mentioned before that I rarely find music with depth and genuinity. But I buy more cd's than ever before, perhaps I'm desperately seeking something new that will sweep me off my feet. ;)

Salehliam I don't "make" those lists either. I just listen to music and the software I use to listen to it on my PC automatically sends data to last.fm (this process is called "scrobbling"). That way Last.fm keeps a record of everything I've been listening to since when I started logging it, and you can see various stuff there, like the most played artists, most played tracks, and can sort them as in "always", "last 3 months", "last 2 weeks" etc.
Of course it doesn't keep track of my CD player or my mp3 portable player.

If you're curious you can check it on Ealdnarche Hope I got the URL right. If not you can just browse users on Lastfm and look for "Ealdnarche".

    @Peter
My... I still can't get used to the fact I'm "talking" to you, feels so strange, it's hard to describe.
But I completely know the feeling you're talking of. I'm still very young I guess, I'm just 30, but the more time passes by, the more I get that feeling (and the more I buy new CDs :D)
I'm sure this feeling must be 100 times more powerful for an artist, a musician, who sees and perceive music from several more perspective than I do, and probably has listened to a lot more music than I did.
Still, I have to agree with Summoningofthemuse. While finding that music is hard, when you do the result is absolutely overwhelming :)

Dear friends..two words..just to say that I agree with you about the fact that finding new music is so difficult...Sounds strange because now we have the possibility to make music, and there are so many ways to "broadcast"...the way of making music has deeply changed...I remember the old times when opening a new LP or CD was a sort of ceremony...now we are surrounded by a lot of information..and maybe we have lost something...but I don't know...it's just my thought...

    @ atriumanimae
I sort of agree on this. Although there are Myspace, Facebook and other internet phenomenons, I think also the amount of released music is increased greatly as well as diversity. What I find a serious draw back is that there are way too many untalented people try to create music nowadays and it could confuse listeners when looking for new music within one genre. I often faced this problem when worked in the cd shop.

Internet has brought so many new things up in recent years, especially in art forms. For example, it is easy to have access to semi-pro cameras by just buying them. The quality will be satisfying and anybody can make movies now. It became really hard to pick the real talent from this bucketful of so-called filmmakers. So many products are out there and the competition is hard, although I think that there has been been a cut in artistic qualities, originality, openness and individuality. Instead of these, the rest of new movies just repeating old cliches and re-playing stuff that there fathers have made.
It applies to music as well, and maybe that's why it's hard to find some new music.

Of course, people can say that there are no more territories to explore, nothing new can be made. Well, I don't think so. It is true that there are many things out there but I think advanced technology made people alienating them selfs from each other and now anybody with half a brain cell could work with a pc and get an album out. I believe that collaborations are much more productive as one individual will influence another in the process and something will be created that needed these individuals. The best example here is Dead Can Dance, Lisa and Brendan.

I don't think we lost something. I think we actually have won something (information) but have to learn how to handle it. I don't want to sit down and dreaming about the '80s if I could go and see DCD performing back then. Those times had difficulties so as these days just different ones.

    @lamb
Thanks lamb79! You've expressed my thoughts clearly!
I agree with you...maybe my previous comment was in a sense misunderstood..my english is so far from perfection and maybe I wrote too fast my thoughts!
I agree with you when you don't think that "people can say that there are no more territories to explore, nothing new can be made"..We have now the possibility to do more things than before, and this is what we can call "democracy" in art.Everyone is able to make something..and, obviously, we have to handle carefully this power..
And sure! "I don't want to sit down and dreaming about the '80s"...no...but in this case I don't like listening music in a mp3 player or download music. Obviously I do it, but I prefer the hard copy, and I remember the value that we (me and my friends) gave to every copy bought in a music shop. And this is why I talk of "lost something" and "when opening a new LP or CD was a sort of ceremony"..
Every time is different, and thanks to new times I have the possibility to make music ;)
So it wasn't something like "how fortunate the man that lives in the 80's" (in a parallel universe) ;-)
